Flowing layers of watercolour form this New York street scene, glowing in reflected light after rainfall.
Beneath Manhattan’s soaring high buildings, crowds huddle under umbrellas and yellow taxis whizz through the rain-slicked streets.
Working with the rough texture of the indian paper, Paul allows the paint to puddle and disperse to give beautiful blends of colour and soft hazy edges.
This piece is painted onto very thick, handmade Indian paper, with ‘torn’ edges. Rather than using a more conventional framing method, which is not practical with paper this thick, this piece is framed using a beautiful ‘Floating Frame’ technique, where the artwork is mounted to a backboard to reveal all of those fantastic edges, with the clear acrylic face of the frame suspended a couple of centimetres above the surface, making for a unique complete piece of art. The accompanying image shows a close-up of the artwork floating within its frame.
You might also enjoy these other New York paintings from Paul's 365 Project. This was a year-long journey exploring a different range of mediums & working at sizes often smaller, than with his studio pieces. In many cases these formed the studies behind the larger studio works.
