Watercolour and Ink on Indian Paper

New York’s Grand Central Station has always been a source of inspiration for Paul, particularly when sunlight beams through the large arched windows, flooding the concourse with light.

The strong light casts dramatic shadows that stretch from bustling crowds of tourists and commuters, rushing to catch their trains.

Painting with quick loose brushmarks, Paul suggests the motion of the ever-changing light and constant circulation of people within this world-famous landmark.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT 'GRAND CENTRAL SUBWAY'

This piece is painted onto very thick, handmade Indian paper, with ‘torn’ edges. Rather than using a more conventional framing method, which is not practical with paper this thick, this piece is framed using a beautiful ‘Floating Frame’ technique, where the artwork is mounted to a backboard to reveal all of those fantastic edges, with the clear acrylic face of the frame suspended a couple of centimetres above the surface, making for a unique complete piece of art. The accompanying image shows a close-up of the artwork floating within its frame.

You might also enjoy these other New York paintings from Paul's 365 Project. This was a year-long journey exploring a different range of mediums & working at sizes often smaller, than with his studio pieces. In many cases these formed the studies behind the larger studio works.
