Walking in the Shadows of the Sidewalk

Watercolour and Ink on Paper

To create this bustling New York street scene, Paul paints with flowing brushmarks to loosen up the rigid city structures.

By allowing the paint to drip and blend on the paper, Paul captures the extraordinary pace and movement of the city.

Painted with rich black ink, the long dramatic shadows cast from pedestrians draw the eye towards the iconic Chrysler Building.

To finish, Paul adds final flourishes with an ink stick.

You might also enjoy these other New York paintings from Paul's 365 Project. This was a year-long journey exploring a different range of mediums & working at sizes often smaller, than with his studio pieces. In many cases these formed the studies behind the larger studio works.
