“Piercing the Mist”

A blaze of orange erupts behind a skyline dissolving into mist, the slender spire of a tower rising through the haze as the river catches fire below. Kenton builds the city from frenetic scratches of charcoal and bleeding washes, the buildings barely holding their form against the molten light. Dark banks of foreground tone anchor the burning heart of the picture.
The result is elemental and almost abstract, a metropolis on the edge of being consumed by its own sunset.
This is an original painting in watercolour, ink, gouache and charcoal on Indian paper, part of the Artisan Paper Collection, float mounted with a black frame, by Paul Kenton.
