“Manhattan Burst”

150 x 150 cm | 59 x 59 in

"Manhattan Burst" is one of the most distinctive pieces in the collection — the canvas built up in an explosion of splattered paint thrown around the silhouette of Paul's famous studio jacket, which was laid onto the canvas during the process and then removed. Within that jacket-shaped space, a detailed New York street scene emerges: skyscrapers and the Chrysler Building framing a long avenue that burns away into a sunset at its centre. Painted in mixed media on boxed canvas as a large-scale original, it's a piece about process as much as place — and the jacket itself, now a paint-covered artefact of the work's creation, is included with the painting as a separate item.
