“Crowds in the Square”

A great square opens beneath a sky heavy with rolling cloud, the tall campanile soaring above the domes and arcaded loggias that line the piazza. Tiny figures scatter across the open paving, their long shadows giving scale to the vast architecture of this most theatrical of Venetian spaces. Light breaks through the clouds to flood the stone with a silvered glow.
Worked in tonal ink, the painting plays the loose drama of the sky against the patient detail of the colonnades and the spire.
This is an original ink painting on Indian paper, part of the Artisan Paper Collection, float mounted with a black frame, by Paul Kenton.
