365 Project

A painting a day for a year — small, fast, unprecious, and the most candid run of work Paul has made.

The rule was one piece a day, wherever he was and whatever the weather: the North Devon coast on the doorstep, Manhattan on a trip, a vigneron’s hut among the vines in Burgundy, prayer flags strung through his own garden. Painted outdoors and at speed, mostly gouache and watercolour on craft, art and Indian paper, and never meant to be corrected afterwards.

That is what makes them worth having. A 365 piece shows the decisions being taken — where the light was, what mattered enough to put down first — and several ideas Paul later took to a large canvas started here. They are also the smallest and least expensive originals in the collection, and signed, numbered prints exist of a handful of them.
