“Footnotes Of The Big Apple” is a vibrant and commanding artwork with a particularly unique origin. Paul’s energetic approach to applying media to his studio works requires him to cover the floor of his studio as he paints. He uses sheets of canvas for this purpose, of the exact type utilized in the construction of the boxed frames used for his paintings. Over weeks and months, this canvas absorbs multiple layers from the palettes and substrates of all the artwork created during this period. In this work, Paul has repurposed this floor canvas to form the foundation palette and tone of “Footnotes Of The Big Apple,” turning it into a dominant impressionist, semi-abstract vista of the Manhattan skyline.
Woven amongst Paul’s trademark impasto and palette knife techniques is an array of footprints from his Doc Martens, his staple footwear when painting. This idiosyncratic feature of the work further plays into the story of how Paul finds inspiration for his studio pieces by continually walking and painting ‘En Plein Air’ in the streets of the cities he loves.
