Lesson breakdown
What you’ll paint
Lesson 1

Tone and Distance
Start with just black and white. Mix a full greyscale, plan your composition with the rule of thirds and a vanishing point, then paint a New York street with the Chrysler Building.
Always believe in what you’re creating. If you’re having fun painting, that’s enough.
Lesson 2

Light and Shadow
Add colour without losing the structure. Paint a sunlit Fifth Avenue with long, colourful shadows and light glowing behind a dark street post.
When you start looking for things to do on a painting, it generally means you’ve finished.
Lesson 3

Sunset Glow
Learn the trick Paul uses in almost every sunset painting, then paint the London skyline with the sun reflected in the Thames.
It’s a really captivating effect that really draws your eye.
Lesson 4

Throwing the Paint
Throw paint onto the canvas and shape it into dynamic forms and textures. A loose, spontaneous and expressive way to bring a scene to life.
There’s a little bit more to it than just chance.
Lesson 5

Painting from the Tube
Squeeze colour straight from the tube onto the board and use the canvas itself as your palette. Paint a vibrant Times Square, mirrored in a glowing reflection, shaping the paint as you go.
You might look at this and think, what a mess. And you’d be right.
Lesson 6

Palette Painting
Bonus lessonA surprise to finish the course. All will be revealed in the final lesson.
About Paul
You’ve probably seen Paul’s paintings already: glowing New York streets and blazing London sunsets, full of texture and light. Over 40 years, Paul has become one of the UK’s most collected contemporary artists. Now he’s opening up his studio and showing you exactly how he paints.
Even if you take away just one idea or technique, it’ll be worth it.
Who it’s for
Everyone. Complete beginners can start with the basics, whilst experienced painters will find techniques they won’t have seen before and gain an insight into the mindset of an international artist. As Paul puts it, no one ever knows everything.
There are no rules. Just relax and have fun.
