“Gilded Manhattan” embodies the infamous New York urban landscape with thick applications of gold paint. The scene portrays a rain-soaked Manhattan street, featuring iconic yellow taxis and towering skyscrapers adorned with bronze, copper, and gold hues. Impasto strokes add texture to the painting, while silhouetted figures traverse the glistening streets. Reflective surfaces of the skyscrapers mirror Manhattan’s ambiance, enhancing the overall symmetry of the composition. This Paul Kenton cityscape evokes his passion for the architectural beauty and scale of New York City’s streets.
“Gilded Manhattan” employs a distinctive method crafted by Paul. The painting was created directly on a palette board initially used for a larger studio piece. The specific colours and paints present on that palette were then utilised in place, to craft this artwork. The borders around the scene are intentionally left in an abstract state to hint at the unique origins of the substrate.
