Against the Elements
North Devon2018
Description
Against the Elements pushes close in on the North Devon coastline, reducing cliff and sea to bold, elemental shapes - a streak of rust-red rock, dense charcoal shadow, and white water breaking below. Paul Kenton lets the paint itself carry the weather here, with loose, layered gouache marks standing in for wind, spray and eroding stone.
The composition sits at the more abstract end of Kenton's 365 project, a series of small, rapidly worked studies made directly from the coast rather than in the studio. Stripped of incidental detail, what remains is texture, tone and the raw physical presence of a coastline under pressure from the sea.
A compact, atmospheric piece that rewards close looking - equally at home as a standalone statement or grouped with other coastal works from the series.
