City Glow

City Glow is Paul Kenton at his most theatrical: a wet street beneath the dark girders of an elevated railway, lit only by a glowing pub sign, ornate lamp posts and a warm doorway. Reflected colour streaks down the rain-soaked road in ribbons of pink, amber and violet.

Painted in gouache on black paper, the technique is the subject here — every highlight is built up out of darkness rather than laid over light, so the night itself does the work of shadow. The mood is quiet and richly atmospheric, a single corner of the city caught between silence and glow.

Part of the Artisan Paper Collection, this original is float mounted in a black frame and signed by the artist.
