City Pulse

City Pulse looks straight down a broad Manhattan avenue, the buildings rising in dark, staggered towers streaked with windows that catch the light in flashes of warm gold. A slender spired skyscraper, recalling the Chrysler Building, anchors the vanishing point beneath a brushed, brooding sky. Traffic streams toward the viewer along the rain-freshened road, headlamps and tail lights flickering red and white against the wet tarmac.

Paul Kenton plays deep charcoal grey against vivid gold and ember, with pops of amber and rust marking the trees along the kerb. The effect is a charged, pulsing vitality that lives up to the painting's name, capturing the restless energy of the city at street level.
