Description

Fairytale Of New York looks straight down onto a rain-soaked Manhattan street packed with umbrella-carrying pedestrians, their dark silhouettes threading through a wash of electric blue, red and orange. Above them, illuminated signage dissolves into pure abstract colour, closer to expressive mark-making than architecture.

The composition trades the vertical, canyon-like perspective of many of Paul Kenton's New York paintings for an aerial, crowd-level view, capturing the sheer density and motion of the city at street level. Mixed media on boxed canvas gives the surface real texture beneath the saturated palette.

At 190.5 x 371cm, this is one of the largest works in the New York collection — a sweeping, panoramic statement piece.
