Footnotes Of The Big Apple
New York2024
Description
Footnotes Of The Big Apple pulls back from Paul Kenton's usual street-level view to survey the whole Manhattan skyline at dusk, the Empire State Building rising near the centre of a dense, glowing city. Layers of gold, amber and ochre stand in for thousands of individual windows, built up with a palette knife into a semi-abstract, impressionist mass.
Above the skyline, a band of deep blue and purple sky is streaked with red cloud, the last colour of the day settling over the city. It's a panoramic, wide-format piece that reads as much as a study in colour and texture as a literal cityscape.
