Description

NY Ablaze sets a Manhattan avenue alight with a molten sunset, the canyon of skyscrapers glowing gold, crimson and burnt orange as the light pours down between the buildings. Yellow cabs push forward through the foreground, their bodywork catching flashes of blue and orange, while the wet street below holds long, rippling reflections of the sky above.

Paul Kenton builds the scene in thick, textured strokes of mixed media and metallics on boxed canvas, letting raw passages of colour stand in for glass, steel and passing headlights. The effect is immersive rather than photographic — a New York remembered in heat and motion rather than architectural detail.

At 244 x 152.5cm, NY Ablaze is a substantial original from Paul's New York Collection, one of the boldest expressions of the city's rush-hour energy he has painted.
