Pier Remains
Brighton2019
Description
'Pier Remains' is a moody study of Brighton's derelict West Pier, its blackened iron skeleton standing stark against a heavy, breaking sky. Paul Kenton works in watercolour and ink, letting deep indigo washes pool and bleed to build a brooding sea and sky, while fine ink linework picks out the pier's fragile latticework of girders and struts.
A shaft of bright cloud breaks through the gloom above the ruin, its reflection rippling down through the water below - the single note of light in an otherwise dark, atmospheric composition. It's a quietly elegiac piece, treating a well-known seaside landmark's decay with real gravity rather than nostalgia.
Framed in silver, this original measures 49.5 x 57 cm framed and is a one-off watercolour.
