Smoke on the Water

A tall chimney sends a slow plume of smoke drifting into a soft, hazy sky above a working stretch of river, where cranes, sheds and a low barge huddle along the far bank. In the foreground the water opens out wide and pale, its surface broken by delicate, calligraphic marks of ink that catch the muted light.

Paul Kenton renders the whole scene in atmospheric monochrome ink, letting graded washes carry the damp chill of the river while fine, energetic linework animates the water's surface. The effect is quietly industrial and unexpectedly poetic, a study in restraint and mood.
