Tibetan Flag Painting in the Garden
2019
Description
Tibetan Flag Painting in the Garden is a still life built around one of Buddhism's most recognisable symbols - a string of Tibetan prayer flags, in their traditional blue, white, red, green and yellow, hung between the branches of a garden tree. Paul Kenton paints in gouache on craft paper, using the paper's warm tone to ground the piece and let the flags' saturated colour sing against dappled greens.
The composition is intimate and quietly meditative: sunlight filters through leaves onto rough bark, while the flags - each colour traditionally standing for one of the five elements - flutter gently overhead. It's a domestic, personal subject rendered with the same confident, energetic brushwork Kenton brings to his coastal and urban scenes.
Framed in a warm bronze moulding, this square original measures 46 x 46 cm framed and is a one-off piece.
