Towering Perspective
New York2019
Description
Towering Perspective drops the viewer straight down into the canyon of a Manhattan street, high above the traffic. Paul Kenton's steep, plunging viewpoint stacks dark glass-and-steel towers on either side of the frame, their windows rendered in loose, confident strokes of charcoal, black and grey that catch and scatter the light.
Below, a pale roadway threads between the buildings, marked with crossing lines and dotted with cars — a single yellow taxi cab supplying the one true splash of colour in an otherwise tonal, near-monochrome composition. Sparse trees soften the hard architecture at street level, while the sheer scale of the buildings pulls the eye upward and away.
Painted in oils on aluminium, the work is part of Paul's New York Collection, developed from his regular working trips to the city in search of fresh urban perspectives and skylines. The aluminium ground gives the paint a subtle sheen, sharpening the sense of height and vertigo built into the composition.
A large-scale original for anyone drawn to the energy of New York seen from above.
