Urban Contours
Chicago2025
Description
Beneath the steel girders of an elevated railway, a One Way sign and pedestrian light mark a quiet crossing in New York City. Zebra stripes fan across the tarmac, a car waits at the kerb, and a lone figure walks the far pavement as pale daylight floods the avenue beyond — an unremarkable corner rendered with real presence.
Paul Kenton works entirely in ink here, building the composition from inky structural blacks through to the faintest silver washes. The hard geometry of the signage, girders and crossing lines is set against soft, atmospheric distance, giving the piece a still, watchful tension.
Urban Contours is an original ink painting on Indian paper from the New York Collection, part of Kenton's Artisan Paper Collection. It is float mounted and presented in a black frame, ready to hang, and — as an original — is a unique, one-off work.
