Description

Silhouetted bicycles line a canal-side railing as the sky over Amsterdam dissolves into gold and violet in this original watercolour and ink painting. Paul Kenton captures the city's familiar rhythm — water, bridges and bikes — at its most atmospheric hour.

Loose, fluid washes build the glow of the sky and its reflection in the canal, while confident ink lines pick out the gabled townhouses and bridge railings, giving the scene both energy and structure.

Amsterdam Ambiance was painted during Paul's travels through Europe and belongs to his wider International Cityscapes body of work, capturing fresh urban scenes gathered en plein air.
