Description

New York Shadows stretches across an 8-foot canvas, placing the viewer at street level on Fifth Avenue as pedestrians cast long, elongated shadows across the pale pavement in the midday light. Beyond them, glass towers rise in cool blues and teals, framing a distant glimpse of the Chrysler Building's spire against a bright sky.

Paul builds the scene in thick impasto, using dramatic tonal contrast between the sunlit ground and the long, near-black shadows to give the composition scale and rhythm. Metallic accents catch across the skyscrapers; up close the paint is tactile and almost abstract, but step back and the full scene resolves into a convincing, sun-bleached slice of Manhattan.

At 152.5 x 244cm, New York Shadows is one of the largest works in Paul's New York Collection, built around the everyday choreography of pedestrians moving through the city's grandest avenue.
