Spaghetti Junction
Birmingham2018
Description
Spaghetti Junction captures the raw, kinetic geometry of Birmingham's Gravelly Hill Interchange - concrete flyovers stacking overhead as traffic threads through in dappled afternoon light. Paul Kenton finds an unlikely beauty in this everyday infrastructure, using loose, confident gouache marks to catch the glint of a windscreen, the red flank of a lorry, and the streaked reflections on wet tarmac.
Painted as part of Kenton's 365 project - a body of small, immediate works made at pace, direct from observation - this piece favours energy over polish. Bold blocks of cobalt and charcoal set against warm concrete tones give the composition real structural weight, while the low, cropped viewpoint puts the viewer right in the traffic.
A striking, contemporary take on one of Britain's most recognisable pieces of urban engineering, ready to hang in its black frame.
