Test Card TV
2019
Description
Test Card TV reimagines the humble living-room set that once signalled the end of the broadcasting day, its screen and dials picked out in crisp black and white against a riot of colour blocks. Paul Kenton borrows the instantly recognisable geometry of the BBC Test Card — the shapes and hues a generation grew up staring at — and rebuilds it as a piece of pop art, part portrait of a machine, part abstract colour study.
Layered in mixed media on aluminium, the painting has the flat graphic punch of screen-print alongside passages of loose, textured paint, giving the nostalgia a distinctly contemporary edge. It's a work built on collective memory: instantly familiar, unapologetically bold, and full of the energy that defines Kenton's Retro collection.
