Crowds in the Square
Venice2025
Description
Crowds in the Square captures Piazza San Marco at its most theatrical, the campanile soaring skyward as a heavy, rolling sky breaks apart to flood the stone with a silvered light. Paul Kenton renders Venice's grand civic stage in tonal ink alone, letting loose, dramatic washes describe the clouds while patient, controlled linework picks out the arcaded loggias, the domes of the basilica, and the tiny figures scattered across the paving.
Worked on Indian paper as part of the Artisan Paper Collection, the painting plays scale against intimacy: the vast architecture of the square is set against the small, human business of people crossing it, their long shadows anchoring the composition. The result is a study in contrast — weight and air, permanence and passing movement — typical of Kenton's international cityscape work.
Float mounted in a black frame, this original is a striking, large-scale addition to a collection, evoking the drama of Venice without ever tipping into cliché.
