Serene Currents

A wide canal opens between leaning waterside buildings, its turquoise surface alive with the broken reflections of domes and ochre facades. A small boat drifts through the foreground, trailing ripples across the colour as the city beyond glows in violet, rose and gold under a soft, bright sky.

Paul Kenton lets the watercolour mingle wet and loose here, ink lines flickering through to suggest masts, windows and waterline without ever tightening the spell of the scene. The result is a Venice caught in full, luminous colour — calm rather than crowded, the water doing as much of the storytelling as the architecture.
