Description

Opalescent Venice unfolds along the Grand Canal as dusk settles, the dome of Santa Maria della Salute rising pale and luminous against a sky of soft lavender and apricot. Below, the canal-side palazzi are threaded with shifting gold, silver and copper highlights, their reflections rippling gently across still water.

Paul's thick impasto technique carries real metallic pigment through the architecture, so the domes and façades catch and hold ambient light rather than simply depicting it. The effect is quiet and atmospheric rather than crowded with incident — a calm, glowing read of one of Venice's most familiar views.
