London

Paul’s home market and his second-most painted city — the river, the skyline and the traffic, mostly at dusk or in the rain.

The Thames runs through nearly all of it. The Shard and the City rise out of a storm-dark sky; St Paul’s dome appears through rain-blurred motion at the head of a wet street; Big Ben glows through streaks of light with a red bus or a phone box holding the foreground. Paul is drawn to the last hour of daylight here, when glass and water start giving light back instead of taking it.

Large mixed-media and metallic originals on boxed canvas and aluminium sit alongside quick watercolour, ink and pastel studies on paper, and signed, numbered prints of a few of the best-known pieces. The subjects run from Westminster and the South Bank to Battersea’s chimneys and the cranes still working behind them.
